I am a Professor of German & Linguistics in the Department of Germanic & Slavic Languages & Literatures (GSLL) and the Program in Linguistics at The Pennsylvania State University. I am a member of the Center for Language Science at Penn State, and a PIRE faculty member. I am currently the Director for the Linguistics Program and the Associate Director for the Center for Language Science here at Penn State. I am director of the Morphology Circle research group here at Penn State. My research focuses on gaining a better understanding of the structural properties of grammar, with a primary empirical focus on Germanic languages past and present (especially in contact and multilingual contexts). My research combines theoretical models with experimental methods, in particular, morphological and lexical processing.
I am also series editor of the book series Studies in Germanic Linguistics (John Benjamins) and the series Open Germanic Linguistics (Language Science Press), editor of the journal Continua (Penn State & University of Stavanger -- OA), editor of the proceedings of WILA (Workshop on Immigrant Languages in the Americas) (Bergen Language & Linguistics Studies), am an Associate Editor for the journal Language (Linguistics Society of America), a member of the editorial board for the book series Studies in Bilingualism (John Benjamins), the journal Linguistic Approaches to Bilingualism (John Benjamins), the journal Evolutionary Linguistic Theory (John Benjamins), the journal Bilingualism: Language and Cognition (Cambridge University Press), the journal Heritage Language Journal (Brill), the Journal of Comparative Germanic Linguistics, the book series Current Issues in Bilingualism (Language Science Press), and the Yearbook of German-American Studies. From 2023-2026 I am serving as Vice President of the Society for Germanic Linguistics.
