The mysteries of syntaxI've always been fascinated with the unbounded creativity of linguistic expression and how we, as individuals and as a species, came to acquire this system. At the same time, I marvel at the limits imposed on this system, and what these may tell us about the cognitive architecture underlying human language. This blog is a collection of musings, thoughts, and questions I have about syntax, i.e. the computational system of the human language faculty, and how we might develop formal tools to better understand its underlying principles. I interpret syntax from a proof-theoretic, derivational perspective that generates objects that are externalized for interpretation by external, non-linguistic interfaces in the mind, but I openly acknowledge that many interesting and essential questions remain unanswered from this perspective and I am open to discuss (and debate!) alternative perspectives. Thanks for stopping by and chatting about syntax! ArchivesNo Archives Categories |
